The lecture focused on sections 1 and 52 of Walt Whitman’s famous long poem, “Song of Myself.” The poem first appeared in the 1855 edition of Whitman’s ubiquitous collection, Leaves of Grass, and was revised several times through the final edition in 1891–92. Known as the American father of free verse poetry, Whitman’s work features signature themes of democracy, nature, spirituality, and the body. Far beyond English, responses to Whitman by poets, authors, and critics can be found in Hebrew, Arabic, Russian, Chinese, Spanish, French, German, and Yiddish, among other languages
